How to Build a Website – The Step by Step Guide for Beginners
Hello there! I just wanted to welcome you to my site, and get right to what I know you want to know: how to build a really successful website! Like you, I wanted to start my own website but I was incredibly lost with a lot of the jargon out there.
These days, there are plenty of different website designers out there that can handle your website needs, but they’re pretty expensive. Many of them are surprisingly limited on what they can honestly do for you. So, where do you honestly start?
Before you can do anything with a website, you have to get the right domain name. Make sure that you take some time to pick this out, as it honestly does matter which name you pick. You could end up picking out a name that doesn’t form a brand. Your brand is very important, as it forms the “identity” of your website.
1. Choosing the Right Platform for Your Needs
There are several different methods for building your site and the oldest one is the basic HTML editor. Yes, this is the method used to create the old and ugly websites during the mid-90’s. However, things have changed and today you can copy and paste your way to a great looking site.
Even better, you can download a template, install it on your host, put up your content and voila, you have a fully functional site! My favorite way of creating a website is still the old way of hacking through the HTML code. However, I will show you how to put up your site in less than 5 minutes without needing to know one single line of HTML. Yes, I promise!
2. Research and Register Your Own Catchy Domain
I can’t really help but repeat how important this one is. This will be your brand and picking something hard to remember will make it difficult to remember. The ideal domain should not be more than 2 but maximum 3 words.
Here are 3 general rules about domains:
Choose a domain relevant to the content and theme of your site.
Choose a domain that is informative and easy to remember.
Choose an appropriate extension, for example if you are targeting people living in the UK use the co.uk extension
My first domain was 31 letters long and contained 5 words. The amazing thing is that it was easier to remember than people thing. Yes, I know what you think, is the site live yet? Well, I have not done anything on it for a long time but the answer is yes, it still exists. If you sign up for my newsletter I promise to reveal the name of it!
3. Choose Your Web Hosting Service
This one is really critical as you don’t want to lose your site, right? There are many poor web hosts on the net but don’t fear. I will explain how to protect your site from vanishing online and how to identify a reputable host. There are also free web hosts available but I would strongly advise you to stay away from these.
While they are free, there are still limitations on them and you will often be left with few options. Worst of all, you can risk losing your site! So, stay away from free options, I ensure you it is not worth it!
Keeping these tips in mind is very important. I want to make sure that you have a real foundation to build your successful website upon. If you put the effort into it, you will get there. Trust me, I know that the road seems long but you can do this. You just have to step back and ask yourself if this is honestly something that you want to do.
Even the most popular websites in the world had to start somewhere. Keeping this in mind will help you get through the rough times where you honestly just want to give up. I have those days, until I realize how much building great websites has changed my life and allowed me to help other people.
What do you want to build? What type of message do you want to focus on? We’ll touch on these themes and many more as time passes, so make sure that you come back often. I have plenty of topics to discuss with you!
